The Canadian wind blew in from the northwest
turning our muggy weather into crisp autumnal bliss.
Giant mackerel clouds swam downstream above our heads,
giant spirit fish with white scales against the
blue ocean of the sky.

I imagined them carrying along in their fins
the smudge smoke of our relations in the north lands
and spreading it over our skies
like a blessing.

I gave them the smoke from my smudge as they passed-
hoping to add to the blessing
and carry it onward
to the rest of our relations.

I thought about how miraculous it is
that we are here, now.
The sky and earth are an oasis of life
in the desert of space.
Our planet is the only place we know
where things grow, bloom, change.
This place is special, unique, sacred,
and so are we.

O sky-fish, thank you for taking
this happy feeling
across the sky
to share
with all my relations.
